High School Tutoring

Taking the HSC is one of the most stressful experiences a young person can go through. Students feel intense pressure to succeed, because their marks determine what pathways they can take in terms of tertiary education. Many university courses require excellent marks and prerequisite subjects at high school level.

Mathematics is one of the toughest subjects an HSC student can study. Over 50,000 HSC students take final maths exams each year, and the failure rate is relatively high compared to other subject areas. Some students avoid pursuing advanced units because of this. Even maths teachers admit that the exams are tough, and they’re only getting more difficult. However, maths is not only important for entry into many university courses, it develops essential thinking and reasoning skills for life.

Mathematics requires a particular mindset and analytical ability that can be difficult for some learners to develop. Each student has a different learning style and different aptitude/s, and without individual guidance, they may find it difficult to grasp concepts. That’s where tutoring can be useful.

MGM Training Academy offers one-on-one tutoring for HSC students in the Sydney area. Our tutors have postgraduate qualifications in maths-heavy fields, as well as practical experience in guiding young learners. We will deliver the highest standard of service and best ethical practice.

We work together to identify areas of weakness, and to develop knowledge and analytical skills. Unlike other tutoring services in the area, there are no set curriculums or fixed packages – you’re not locked in to anything. You can take advantage of our tutors’ expertise for as long (or as little) as you need. We have a strong track record of dramatically improving marks. For example, Alison*, 17, came to us in her preliminary HSC year and was taken through the Extension 1 Maths curriculum all the way to her final exams. Initially, she was an average student achieving around 50% in her examinations. After she was tutored by our experts, this mark improved dramatically from higher 60%s to eventually in the 80%+ consistently through her HSC success.

Structure of Lessons for Year 7-12

In the initial session, the student is evaluated by what they are up to in the Mathematics curriculum. Any inherent weaknesses is also able to be identified with an action item and plan of what must be done moving forward to improve their teaching and development. The teaching of materials is done by using the relevant worksheet stencils and or recommended text books. The work is taught by the tutor giving demonstrated examples and teaching concepts around this for the student to understand the work. After student understands the work, he/she is then observed how they apply the topic/concepts by giving them self guided practice questions under direct supervision and observations. Further tuition is then enhanced when they are practically doing the question to ensure they know exactly what they have learnt and can apply it outside the lesson.

We are happy to answer any questions that students or their parents/caregivers may have regarding the curriculum, or how we can help. Call 0433 152 760 or contact us online to get started.
